Common Questions & Answers

Having Microsoft Defender isn’t a long term solution but will work in a pinch.  Microsoft isn’t a security company, or a anti-virus company, so they don’t pour the time and effort into their security software like the most common offerings such as BitDefender, Norton, McAfee, Webroot and others.  We never recommend using Microsoft Windows Defender for security.  Our current recommendation is BitDefender Total or Premium Security.  All of our business clients are protected by the business version of BitDefender and it’s what we use on all of our business and personal computers.

The first thing I recommend is disconnect from the internet, either physically or virtually, immediately.  The next stop is to run your onboard anti-virus software, which we hope is BitDefender, and see if there are any infections.  If there is, contact us immediately to see what the next steps will be.

The short answer is no.  The more in-depth answer is that no computer system connected to the internet is 100% safe while running any security software.  There are many reasons why, one of them being that you cannot control human interactions with the internet and email.  There are bad actors that can manipulate anyone to open an email, a link or download some software that can get by even the best security software.  The best way to protect yourself is to have a layered defense, which we will discuss more in the cyber security section.  However, layered defense consists of a physical firewall, a network behind your internet providers network and of course firewall software, as well as security software.

The answer to that is yes, anti-virus software will slow down your computer, just like any other software you install that runs on constant basis.  However, security software manufacturers have improved their software regarding resource management.  Still, some of the bigger names still have some decent impact on the operation of the computer.  With newer, more equipped computers, the impact on your computer should be negligible.  If your computer is 4-6 years old there will be more of an impact.

The answer to that is no.  You always hear the old adage, “you get what you pay for”, and it’s very true with anti-virus software.  We trust the free versions more than Microsoft Windows Defender, but we still don’t condone using either.  The free versions will usually have less features, such as built-in firewalls, early detection, advanced threat defense, real-time detection and other features.  The cost of annual anti-virus programs is far less than what it would cost for an IT specialist to remove and figure out what else is affected on your computer.
